What is CRM hygiene?
CRM hygiene is how complete, accurate, and current the records in a CRM are. Good hygiene means contacts, statuses, criteria, and activity reflect reality. Poor hygiene means blank fields, duplicates, stale facts, and records nobody trusts. At deal firms, hygiene fails structurally: updating the CRM is extra work with no immediate payoff, so it loses to live deal work every time.
The usual fixes are mandates, training, and cleanup projects. They fail for the same reason the problem exists: they ask expensive people to do low-value typing. A one-time cleanup decays the day it finishes, because the world keeps changing and the incentive to type never improves.
Durable hygiene comes from changing where updates come from. If the record is maintained from the work itself, emails, calls, meetings, and live outside sources, and a person only reviews and approves, hygiene stops depending on discipline.
A useful test for any hygiene tool: does every proposed change show the old value, the new value, the source, and the date, and does a human approve it? Bulk overwrites from a single data feed are how one bad source contaminates a whole CRM.
